The Print Books Are Coming! — Post by Mary C. Findley

nonfic 4 hope

We know some people love the smell and feel of paper books, so we are happy to meet that need. Following is a list of Findley Family Video Publications print titles as of 7/31/2015, in alphabetical order. Some are still filtering through from CreateSpace to Amazon and getting connected to the ebook titles.  As soon as that happens, the only titles not available in print are The Acolyte’s Education and Carrie’s Hired Hand, short stories fewer than 50 pages in length. So, if you want print versions of any of our other books, hang on until they are all in place at your favorite online retailer and then snap them up.

What in the World Is Steampunk and Why Would a Christian Write About It? FFVP Author post by Sophronia Belle Lyon

long sophronia signature pic

I don’t know why it’s become popular to attach “punk” to music, fashion, and literary genre, but it is what it is.  Steampunk can find expression in all these outlets, but many people say it originated in fashion or clothing. It’s a style that draws on the Victorian time period, including  top hats, cravats, corsets, spats, veils and parasols, but adds a speculative alternative history based on the possibility that we might have gone with steam power instead of petroleum. It includes goggles for the amazing gadgets like airships and coal-powered vehicles, often made of bronze and running with clockwork mechanisms.

I haven’t gotten into the music aspects so I don’t know about those. But when it comes to the literary genre, I’m learning more all the time. I was immediately attracted to the Victorian setting, because I love books written in the time period. And many Steampunk books include famous literary characters like Sherlock Holmes. I really got bitten by the Steampunk bug when I saw the movie League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I wanted to write about characters I loved and those early scientific rumblings.

But I didn’t like some aspects of Steampunk. It’s supposed to test the boundaries of Victorian morality, and I would rather uphold strong morality than see how far I can push it before it breaks. That’s already being done too much today. It also tends to focus on feminism, and I’ve never been a fan of that. Steampunk combines some of my favorite literary elements: historical, scifi, and fantasy.

So I wanted to make my own Steampunk series, with characters who stay true to the classic books I loved. I included characters from Louisa May Alcott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Jane Austen, and Edward S. O’Reilly.  I also wanted to lift up married love, romance with restraint, true courage, camaraderie, and generosity. Be warned: There’s mild reference to smoking, dancing, and alcohol consumption. Evil men do evil things, but there’s not a lot of detail. The stories contain adventure, mystery, suspense, and a strong message of people who will dare anything and sacrifice anything to tap into the power of God to fight evil.

A Dodge, a Twist, and a Tobacconist is the first book in the series, and the ebook version is free.  It also has a print and illustrated version. The Pinocchio Factor is the second book, and features a grown-up Oliver Twist as an eccentric inventor. The third book is The Most Dangerous Game, featuring Pecos Bill and hi wife, Sluefoot Sue (in case you ever wanted to know what her riding that giant catfish was all about).

Guest post by Randy Blackwell: Welcome to the World of Soterion!

Kasey Myles

This is amazing! A novel, and  soon to be an RPG-Based SciFi/Fantasy/Steampunk creation! It would make a stunning addition to the collection of anyone who loves these genres. Please take a look at these amazing images (And these are just tiny samples! You have to see the real stuff!) and then visit with my friend Randy Blackwell on his own site about his novel that will lead to the RPG book:

For Your Christmas Baking Pleasure: Uncle Vanya’s Bread Balls

bread ball recipe

Warning: Don’t forget Uncle Vanya’s cast-iron rolling pin is always ready for those disrespectful of his recipe.

Make sweet roll dough as follows:

1/2 cup warm water
2 (1/4 ounce) packages active dry yeast
(Uncle Vanya uses cake yeast. Don’t tell him if you use dry packets)
1 1/2 cups milk, lukewarm (Uncle Vanya says you must scald!)
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 eggs
1/2 cup shortening
7 -7 1/2 cups flour

Directions:

1 Mix water and yeast in large mixing bowl.
2 Stir until dissolved.
3 Add milk, sugar salt, eggs, shortening and 1/2 of the flour.
4 Mix until smooth and pour out onto floured surface. Knead while adding the additional flour. Knead until smooth and elastic( about 5 minutes). Note that Uncle Vanya does not own a watch, so this time is approximate.
5 Round up in greased bowl with greased side up. Cover with damp cloth.
6 Let rise in warm place until double (about 1&1/2 hours).
7 Punch down; let rise again until almost double. (No short-cuts, single rising stuff, says Uncle Vanya)
8 Dough is ready to to make into balls now.

Filling:

2 tablespoons butter, softened
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts (no peanuts, but other nuts can be used)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups finely chopped peeled tart apples (Other fruits such as currants, cranberries, anything tart, can be substituted)

Directions

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough into about a dozen small rounds. Spread with butter. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, nuts, cinnamon and nutmeg; add fruit and toss to coat. Place a manageable amount on each round of dough and press the dough together, sealing the filling inside. Do a good job. Uncle Vanya does not approve of leaky bread balls)

Place in a greased 11-in. x 7-in. baking dish. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 40 minutes. (Yes, babooshka, they rise three times!)

Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Tatiana also likes to deep fry them like doughnut holes, just until they are crispy brown on all sides.

ICING (or you could just roll them in cinnamon sugar while they are warm, says Tatiana)

1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
2-1/2 teaspoons whole milk
Combine icing ingredients until smooth; drizzle over warm balls. Yield: 1 dozen.

Review of Remnant in the Stars by Cindy Koepp

Remnant in the Stars

How far will a father go to rescue his daughter, and how much power does he really have to bring that about? How hard will a soldier push herself to do her duty when doing it has already cost her health, friendship and maybe her future? What will it take to bring together two races desperately in need of each other? Most members don’t even try to hide their disdain and disgust for each other. You have no idea how richly complex the answers to these questions are and how much you need to find them out by reading this book.

Sora is taking his place among my all-time favorite characters. He’s a typical father, keeping his children’s colorful drawings close to his heart. He’s everybody’s wise and patient friend, even those who tell him to “butt out.” But even the Pilgrim in Bunyan’s timeless allegory might not have tried to carry as big a burden of guilt as Sora does. His patience and open-heartedness create an unexpected opportunity for the expression of the author’s Christian faith.

Some people might object to the inclusion of multiple intelligent races but Koepp makes it work for me. It’s easy to take a somewhat allegorical view of certain beings. It’s clear that the message of the book is to give God the glory for good decisions, victories and even happy reunions.

The Numodynes are more than a little puzzling. But they are an important picture of how good and evil can look a lot alike. Even when you make the effort to figure out which is which, they can still both have a powerful effect on you and your plans. It’s good thing God is there to help with the understanding and the response.
