Genesis: Book of Beginnings

Genesis: Book of Beginnings

This book is a Bible Study of the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. The Bible text used for this study is the King James Version (KJV). This Book is the first book in the Series entitled Journey Through the Bible. Genesis: Book of Beginnings Book 1.

This book is a Study Guide for the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. The Bible text used for the study is the King James Version (KJV). It is fitting that we should start with Genesis, which is the book of Beginnings. Genesis: The Book of Beginnings is the first book in this series of Journey Through the Bible.

Genesis means “the beginning” and it is a book of beginnings. It records the creation of the world and the beginning of the nation of Israel. Chapters 12-50 focus on one man, Abraham, and his descendants. Abraham, his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob are called the patriarchs of Israel. Jacob’s twelve sons are the beginnings of the twelve tribes of Israel. Through Joseph, one of Jacob’s sons, the whole family settles in Egypt.

The word Genesis means origin or creation. Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, is a book of beginnings. It has been said that every major doctrine has its seed or beginning in Genesis. For example, the material universe, the human race, sin, the promise of the Messiah, languages and the Hebrew nation all have their beginnings in the book of Genesis. For this reason Genesis is called the seed pot of the whole Bible. Every great fact, truth and revelation is found in this book in germ form. The book of Genesis is essential to the understanding of all the other books of the Bible.

Moses wrote the book of Genesis about 1500 years before Christ. Moses received the oracles directly from God. They were not handed down by word-of-mouth (Acts 7: 37, 38). God can just as easily tell a person the past as he can the future. The book Genesis covers a time period of nearly 2500 years, from the Creation to the journey of Israel into Egypt.

How Could You Raise the Price on the Conflict of the Ages?

origin evil world was student 10

10 conflict 1 studentIn case you didn’t know it, we are working on a series called The Conflict of the Ages. It now has two installments:. The Scientific History of Origins, and The Origin of Evil in the World that Was. These are designed for homeschoolers  who want a better grasp of the essentials of world history from a scientific and authoritative point of view. These books fulfill state education requirements for a well-rounded historical and scientific study. They include ancient  sources outside the Bible that echo the truths of literal creation and what the world was like in ancient times. They  merge History and Science, and later will include Literature studies as well. References and supplementary information for further  study comprise more than half of each book. When we first published these, our main concern was to keep them  affordable, so we priced Teacher and Student editions at 99 cents. We have, however, gotten feedback suggesting we “up our game” by adding better organizational structure and illustrations to improve the reader’s experience. The additional material increased the file size and the 99 cent minimum price was no longer an option. We know that economic times are not improving and many families are struggling to pay for homeschool curriculum as it is. But we hope you will consider the “added value” of better organization and illustrations, and consider adding these works to your homeschool curriculum. We’d love to have homeschoolers give this series a try, and to give us your feedback. It’s designed to be in easily manageable modules, between 100-200 pages of main text each, and has Student and Teacher editions, with answer keys and teacher helps included.

These upgraded versions are available now on Smashwords, and should be ready in a few hours on Amazon.

There Should Be A List — Post by Michael J. Findley

AiG (Answers in Genesis) has a webpage listing arguments Christians should not use because they are already disproved, weak, or there is not enough evidence.
Secular Humanists should make a similar list of arguments (reasoned positions, not heated debates) used against creationism which are already disproved, weak or lack evidence. The AiG list contains 29 separate arguments. If a Secularist would make a similar kind of list for fellow Secularists, it would be a much larger list.
Secularists routinely call me ignorant, uneducated (I have an earned M.A.), opposed to science, and many other things I will not repeat. While these statements are libel, I could honestly and legitimately make some of those charges about some of them. Instead, I will simply use the word silly. It is silly to repeat a thoroughly refuted argument. It is silly to be so uninformed that you do not understand the beliefs of someone you are attacking.

Since these people will likely just ignore any list I make of their own silliness, I will make a very brief list of what we believe. First, when we examine evidence, we understand that physical evidence requires several assumptions. First, that the physical “laws”, as science has chosen to call them, are constant. Just one example; a thermometer will always register the same temperature, assuming that the conditions are the same. Second, we understand that our knowledge is limited. No one has ever taken a core sample of the planet Jupiter. Nor is there a firm scientific definition of the word “breed” in animal husbandry. Third, it is not scientifically possible to dismiss the supernatural as not existing, since the supernatural cannot be measured with scientific instruments. A humorous examination of these problems is found in the illustrated book Motel of the Mysteries by David Macaulay.

These are some of the reasons why courts use witness testimony as the most reliable testimony. That does not mean that witness testimony should be accepted without question. Motives must be examined. The history of the witness (character) must be examined. The circumstances must be examined and witnesses compared. Also, physical (circumstantial) evidence, if it is strong enough, can overrule witness testimony.

We have examined the evidence and concluded that the Bible is the Word of God. (The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell.) Ancient written testimony on origins outside of the Word of God needs to be examined carefully, but is the next most reliable source of information. Even preschoolers know enough to ask “Were you there?” Physical evidence is open to interpretation and though it can be helpful, it is less reliable than written records outside of the Word of God.
“And God said to the angel of the presence: “Write for Moses from the beginning of creation till My sanctuary has been built among them for all eternity.” Book of Jubilees I:27
“And the angel of the presence spake to Moses according to the word of the Lord, saying: Write the complete history of the creation, how in six days the Lord God finished all His works and all that He created.” II:1

The Book of Jubilees has twenty-one copies among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Some Christians, such as the Coptic Church, believe that the Book of Jubilees is part of the Word of God. The first six days of creation, God was working, that is, inputting energy and matter. The laws of physics as we know them were not in place yet.
The original creation was the space/time continuum, as general relativity puts it, and matter. The original matter was all water. The earth was created out of water and by water. (2 Peter 3:5) or, as Genesis 1:1 puts it, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. The Mayan book Written Leaves or the Popol Vuh says of the original creation “in the day and year of the clouds.” Berossus said about the original creation, “For the whole universe consisting of moisture…” A Polynesian creation myth says “In Whai-tua two existences without shape were formed: Maku (moisture), a male, and Mahora-nui-a-rangi (Great Expanse of Heaven), a female…”

Light was created on the first day, so there was no problem with plants. While plants need light, they are not required to have sunlight. Even without that light, plants were created on Day Three and the sun on Day Four. Less than twenty-four hours without sunlight is not a problem. People who claim that there is some problem are displaying their ignorance.

When the land was created, it was created out of water. This original creation of land had no life forms. Today we see the original creation of land as the lowest layers of sediment without fossils.

The entire universe, including sun, moon, planets, stars and all other celestial objects, were put in place on the fourth day. The photons of light allowing us to see them were put in place at the same time, allowing them to be visible the creatures on earth to see them.

All organisms were created by the end of the sixth day. The information about Adam and Eve in Chapter Two of Genesis provides additional complementary information, similar to several reporters writing accurately about the same story. Adam’s body was formed out of existing material directly by God. Adam was then was given life by God. Like Adam, Eve’s body was formed out of existing material. Even today, rib tissue can regenerate. The discussion between the serpent and Eve was neither an allegory nor a fairy tale, but a historical record. To reject the historical record of the Fall means there is no need for an atonement for sin. There is no need for a virgin-born sinless atoning sacrifice.

Adam, all creatures, plants, and the universe were created fully-formed and, by the end of Day Six, fully functional. We do not know if these trees had rings. Nor do we know if any of them survived the flood.

Water came up from the earth, watered the garden (park) of Eden, then split into four parts to water the earth. Geysers and hot springs are found all over the world. Perhaps the Garden of Eden was similar to Yellowstone Park today, with Yellowstone Lake and Yellowstone River.

For 1656 years the climate was, by our standards, mild and constant. This is what uniformitarians see in the fossil record and call the Devonian Period. There is much disagreement about the exact differences during the Antediluvian period compared to today, but we know that the huge creatures of this period, dragonflies with 52″ wingspans. and flying creatures with 45′ wingspans, could not fly today. The largest creatures of this period probably could not even walk today. It was a time of lush vegetation.

There is disagreement about a catastrophe with many changes sometime in the middle of the Antediluvian period. Numerous written documents claim that there was, but Bible does not say anything about such a catastrophe.

The four rivers coming out of Eden watered the earth. That made Eden the highest or at least one of the highest points on the single continent of the Antediluvian world. It also means that because the environment of Eden was comfortable for nudity, there were no high mountains like we have today. In the year 1656 AM, God sent a catastrophic flood which destroyed all land life on earth.

According to every document which records the flood, including the Bible, it was a series of different events. The original creation laid down solid material. This was followed by 1656 years of gentle deposits. The first weeks of the flood included violent volcanic activity, putting massive amounts of volcanic material into the oceans. This created many different layers of sediment on top of the original creation layers and the Antediluvian layers. Tectonic plate movements caused uplifts, bending and twisting the layers that followed these. This caused more volcanic activity, creating more layers of sediment.

This catastrophe also invalidates all dating methods, because all known dating methods rely on uniformitarian assumptions. The actual conditions during the flood are unknown. The original created conditions are unknown.

Noah did not open the doors to the ark and release the animals until the vegetation returned. Up to this point God had not given men permission to eat animals, so this return of vegetation was the food supply. Lifespans were shorter, which is another indication of changes.

The Ice Age began because of  oceans warmed by volcanic activity and volcanic dust blocking the sun and cooling the atmosphere. Because of the water trapped in the ice, lower ocean levels allowed to men and animals to walk over the most of the earth. The experience of the ark also gave men shipbuilding skills.

At some point, hundreds of years later, the Ice Age ended and the earth stabilized. It is so sad that men today believe that by looking at the earth and the existing conditions on earth that they can understand the past. They ignore both the written records of the past and material evidence which contradicts what they choose to believe.

“The LORD possessed me [wisdom] in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth.” Proverbs 8:22-29

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”  Genesis 1:1

“But when the earth did not come into sight, but was covered with thick darkness, and a wind moved upon its surface, God commanded that there should be light …” Flavius Josephus Antiquities of the Jews – Book I, Translated by William Whiston, 1737

“In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed, but you remain the same.” Hebrews 1:10-12 NIV

“In the year and in the day of the clouds, before ever were years or days, the world lay in darkness. All things were orderless, and water covered the slime and ooze that the earth then was.” Garcia in his Origin de los Indias (Translation of Mixtec picture-manuscript) Quoted in The Myths of Mexico and Peru by Lewis Spence 1913.

“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2

“Before the seas, and this terrestrial ball,
And Heav’n’s high canopy, that covers all,
One was the face of Nature;
If a face: Rather a rude and indigested mass:
A lifeless lump, unfashion’d, and unfram’d,
Of jarring seeds; and justly Chaos nam’d.
No sun was lighted up, the world to view;
No moon did yet her blunted horns renew:
Nor yet was Earth suspended in the sky,
Nor pois’d, did on her own foundations lye:

Nor seas about the shores their arms had thrown;
But earth, and air, and water, were in one.
Thus air was void of light, and earth unstable,

And water’s dark abyss unnavigable.
No certain form on any was imprest;
All were confus’d, and each disturb’d the rest.
For hot and cold were in one body fixt;
And soft with hard, and light with heavy mixt.”
Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Book 1,Translator John Dryden et al, 1717.

“In the beginning, on the First Day, which was the holy First Day of the Week, the chief and Firstborn of all the days, God created the heavens, and the earth, and the waters, and the air, the fire, and the hosts which are invisible (that is to say, the Angels, Archangels, Thrones, Lords, Principalities, Powers, Cherubim and Seraphim), and all the ranks and companies of Spiritual beings, and the Light, and the Night, and the Day-time, and the gentle winds and the strong winds (i.e. storms). All these were created on the First Day. And on the First Day of the Week the Spirit of holiness, one of the Persons of the Trinity, hovered over the waters and through the hovering thereof over the; face of the waters, the waters were blessed so that they might become producers of offspring, and they became hot, and the whole nature of the waters glowed with heat, and the leaven of creation was united to them. As the mother-bird maketh warm her young by the embrace of her closely covering wings, and the young birds acquire form through the warmth of the heat which (they derive) from her, so through the operation of the Spirit of holiness, the Spirit, the Paraclete, the leaven of the breath of life was united to the waters when He hovered over them.” The Book of the Cave of Treasures, Part One, translation (Brit. Mus. MS. Add. 25875.) [The Title of the Work: The Scribe’s Prayer]    [Fol. 3b, col. 1.] “By the might of our Lord Jesus Christ we begin to write the “Book of the Succession of the Generations,” that is to say, ME`ÂRATH GAZZÊ, which was composed by SAINT MÂR APHRÊM (i.e. Ephraim, commonly known as “Ephraim Syrus,” or “Ephraim the Syrian,” who died A.D. 373). “O our Lord, help Thou me in Thy Mercy. Amen.” Translated from the Syriac by E. A. Wallis Budge [London, The Religious Tract Society] [1927] {scanned and edited by Christopher M. Weimer, June 2002}

“Over a universe wrapped in the gloom of a dense and primeval night passed the god Hurakan, the mighty wind. He called out ‘Earth,’ and the solid land appeared.” Popul Vuh, Book 1, Translated by Lewis Spence   July 1908.

“Verily at the first Chaos came to be, but next wide-bosomed Earth, the ever-sure foundations of all (4) the deathless ones who hold the peaks of snowy Olympus, and dim Tartarus in the depth of the wide-pathed Earth, and Eros (Love), fairest among the deathless gods, who unnerves the limbs and overcomes the mind and wise counsels of all gods and all men within them. From Chaos came forth Erebus and black Night; but of Night were born Aether (5) and Day, whom she conceived and bare from union in love with Erebus. And Earth first bare starry Heaven, equal to herself, to cover her on every side, and to be an ever-sure abiding-place for the blessed gods.” The Theogony of Hesiod (ll. 116-138) Translated by Hugh G. Evelyn-White. 1914.

“Of Aûharmazd’s creatures of the world, the first was the sky; the second, water; the third, earth; the fourth, plants; the fifth, animals; the sixth, mankind.” Narration 28  Bundahis, Chapter I, “In the name of the creator Aûharmazd.” (Persian)

1. When in the height heaven was not named,
2. And the earth beneath did not yet bear a name,
3. And the primeval Apsû, who begat them,
4. And chaos, Tiamat, the mother of them both,–
5. Their waters were mingled together,

6. And no field was formed, no marsh was to be seen;
7. When of the gods none had been called into being,
8. And none bore a name, and no destinies [were ordained];

“Two existences without shape were formed: Maku (“Moisture”), a male; and Mahora-nui-a-rangi (“Great Expanse of Heaven”), a female; from these sprang Rangi-potiki (“The Heaven”s), who took to wife Papa (“Earth”) and begat the gods.” Oceanic Mythology by Roland B. “From the conception the increase
From the increase the swelling
From the swelling the thought
From the thought the remembrance
From the remembrance the consciousness, the desire.
The word became fruitful:
It dwelt with the feeble glimmering
It brought forth night;
The great night, the long night,
The lowest night, the loftiest night,
The thick night, the night to be felt,
The night touched, the night unseen.
The night following on,
The night ending in death.
From the nothing, the begetting,”
From the nothing the increase
From the nothing the abundance,
The power of increasing, the living breath;”
It dwelt with the empty space,
It produced the atmosphere which is above us.
The atmosphere which floats above the earth,
The great firmament above us,
The spreadout space dwelt with the early dawn,
Then the moon sprang forth;
The atmosphere above dwelt with the glowing sky,
Forthwith was produced the sun,
They were thrown up above as the chief eyes of Heaven:
Then the Heavens became light, the early dawn, the early day,
The mid-day. The blaze of day from the sky.
The sky which floats above the earth
Dwelt with Hawaiki.Oceanic Mythology, by Roland B. Dixon ©1916, Part I, “Polynesia, Myths of Origins and the Deluge, New Zealand,” p. 6, R. Taylor, p. 109.

“God creates a large 3-D space and within it a ball of liquid water, the “deep.” The ball is greater than two light-years in diameter, large enough to contain all the mass of the universe. Because of the great concentration of matter, this ball of water is deep within a black hole, whose event horizon is more than half a billion light-years away. The earth at this point is merely a formless, undefined region of water at the center of the deep, empty of inhabitant or feature. …

“The gravitational force on the deep is very strong …  This force compresses the deep very rapidly toward the center, making it extremely hot and dense. The heat rips apart the water molecules, atoms, even the nuclei into elementary particles. Thermonuclear fusion reactions begin, forming heavier nuclei from lighter ones and liberating huge amounts of energy. As a consequence, an intense light illuminates the interior, breaking through to the surface and ending the darkness there.” Starlight and Time, Dr. Russell Humphreys, 2004.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light:’ and there was light.  And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” Genesis 1:3-5

“This is the account of how all was in suspense, all calm, in silence; all motionless, still, and the expanse of the sky was empty. This is the first account, the first narrative. There was neither man, nor animal, birds, fishes, crabs, trees, stones, caves, ravines, grasses, nor forests; there was only the sky. The surface of the earth had not appeared. There was only the calm sea and the great expanse of the sky.”

“There was nothing brought together, nothing which could make a noise, nor anything which might move, or tremble, or could make noise in the sky. There was nothing standing; only the calm water, the placid sea, alone and tranquil. Nothing existed. There was only immobility and silence in the darkness, in the night.

“Only the creator, the Maker, Tepeu, Gucumatz, the Forefathers, were in the water surrounded with light. They were hidden under green and blue feathers, and were therefore called Gucumatz. By nature they were the great sages and great thinkers. In this manner the sky existed and also the heart of Heaven, which is the name of God thus He is called.

“Then came the word. Tepeu and came together in the darkness, in the night, and Tepeu and Gucumatz talked together. They talked then, discussing and deliberating; they agreed, they united their words and their thoughts. Then while they meditated, it became clear to them that when dawn would break, man must appear. Then they planned the creation, and the growth of the trees and the thickets and the birth of life and the creation of man.

“Thus it was arranged in the darkness and in the night by the Heart of Heaven who is called Huracan. The first is called Caculha Huracan. The second is ChipiCaculha. The third is Raxa-Caculha. And these three are the Heart of Heaven. Then Tepeu and Gucumatz came together; then they conferred about life and light, what they would do so that there would be light and dawn, who it would be who would provide food and sustenance.

“‘Thus let it be done! Let the emptiness be filled! Let the water recede and make a void, let the earth appear and become solid; let it be done.’ Thus they spoke. ‘Let there be light, let there be dawn in the sky and on the earth! There shall be neither glory nor grandeur in our creation and formation until the human being is made, man is formed.’

“So they spoke. Then the earth was created by them. So it was, in truth, that they created the earth. ”Earth! They said, and instantly it was made. Like the mist, like a cloud and like a cloud of dust was the creation, when the mountains appeared from the water; and instantly the mountains grew.” Popol Vuh (“Written Leaves”) Book of the Mayas. The Book of the Community Book 1, English Version by Delia Goetz and Sylvanus G. Morley, copyright 1950 by the University of Oklahoma Press. Translation by Adrián Recinos.

“Io dwelt within the breathing-space of immensity.
The Universe was in darkness, with water everywhere,
There was no glimmer of dawn, no clearness, no light.
And he began by saying these words,–
That He might cease remaining inactive:
‘Darkness! Become a light-possessing darkness.’
And at once light appeared.
[He] then repeated those self-same words in this manner,
That He might cease remaining inactive:
‘Light! Become a darkness-possessing light.’
And again an intense darkness supervened,
And a third time He spake, saying:
‘Let there be one darkness above,
Let there be one darkness below (alternate),
Let there be a darkness unto Tupua,
Let there be a darkness unto Tawhito,
It is a darkness overcome and dispelled.
Let there be one light above,
Let there be one light below (alternate),
Let there be a light unto Tupua,
Let there be a light unto Tawhito,
A dominion of light,
A bright light.’
And now a great light prevailed.
[Io] then looked to the waters, which compassed him about,
And spake a fourth time, saying:
‘Ye waters of Tai-kama be ye separate
Heaven, be formed’ The the sky became suspended.
‘Bring-forth, thou, Tupua-horo-riuku.’

“Then God said, ‘Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.’ And God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. And God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.”  Genesis 1:6-8 (NASB)

“On the second day, he placed the heaven over the whole world, and separated it from the other parts, and he determined it should stand by itself. He also placed a crystalline [firmament] round it, and put it together in a manner agreeable to the earth, and fitted it for giving moisture and rain, and for affording the advantage of dews.”

On 2 Eb he made the first stairway. It descended from the midst of the heavens, in the midst of the water, when there were neither earth, rocks nor trees.
On 3 Ben he made all things, as many as there are, the things of the heavens, the things of the sea and the things of the earth.
On 4 Ix sky and earth were tilted.
On 5 Men he made everything.
On 6 Cib the first candle was made; it became light when there was neither sun nor moon.”

“But God, or Nature, while they thus contend, To these intestine discords put an end:
Then earth from air, and seas from earth were drive’n,
And grosser air sunk from aethereal Heav’n.
Thus disembroil’d, they take their proper place;
The next of kin, contiguously embrace;
And foes are sunder’d, by a larger space.
The force of fire ascended first on high,
And took its dwelling in the vaulted sky:
Then air succeed, in lightness next to fire;
Whose atoms from unactive earth retire.
Earth sinks beneath, and draws a num’rous throng
Of pondrous, thick, unwieldy seeds along.
About her coasts, unruly waters roar;
And rising, on a ridge, insult the shore.
Thus when the God, whatever God was he,
Had form’d the whole, and made the parts agree,
That no unequal portions might be found,
He moulded Earth into a spacious round:

Principles of Science Teaching

There are only two ways to teach Science: to teach it as a unified subject or divide it into categories. Unified sounds good but can be overwhelming to students. Subatomic particles like electrons don’t divide themselves into disciplines according to how they behave. In Physics we study electrons in different ways from observing how they behave in Organic Chemistry as electrons generating electrical impulses. By the time they have traveled down nerves and crossed synapses and caused our muscles to move they have gone over into the study of Biology. In fact, a degree in electrical engineering is known as an EEE (electrical and electronics engineer) because electricity and electronics operate so differently on a large and a small scale.

To keep from overwhelming students on high school level and below the sciences are generally divided into different subject areas. In Jr High or Middle School they are simply taught as Physical Sciences and Life Sciences. In High School the subjects are usually broken down into Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Interrelationships are rarely explored in detail because there is no time.

The question often asked about science is, how do you make these subjects Christian? In Life Science, you can emphasize the fact that God created all life, and it did not develop by evolution. We can also study God’s requirements for treating all life, animal, plant, and human. In the hard sciences (those that are testable in a laboratory setting), the Bible speaks just as clearly.  “By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the Word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible” (Heb 11:3 NASB).

The spiritual created the material. The supernatural can intervene in and change the material world. Job got boils from head to foot from no physical cause. Jesus walked on water and healed people born blind and lame. Elijah was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot.

The material universe is finite, not infinite. Though God is in control, we are responsible as mangers. God will hold us accountable for the way we manage the material world. “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” (Genesis 1:26)

The world is relatively young, less than 10,000 years old. It is going to be destroyed by act of God’s judgment because of man’s rebellion. Man cannot destroy the earth.The Bible demands that we have wisdom and skill in handling material possessions but we should not spend all our time efforts and energy developing these things. They are secondary to worshiping God. The material world is not to become our god. We should not become obsessed with seeking material possessions or how to manipulate the material world. How we handle science will determine the quality of our life here on earth. We are limited in what it can do to the material world and it is finite and temporary.

Science is constantly changing, more than any other field. Whatever curriculum a homeschooling family chooses it must be a modern, comprehensive textbook acknowledging the principles God has set forth.

Important Points Which Must Be Covered in Education

I. The Bible is the authoritative foundation for science, arts, literature, math, history, geography, geology, physics, chemistry, medicine, biology and all other academic disciplines. Anything which contradicts the Word of God either directly or by ignoring it, is in error.

II. The Material universe was created out of the non material world.

III. The Original Creation was water.

IV. God worked on the first six days of creation. That is, God supernaturally used power that is not being used today. God’s creative power cannot be measured with scientific instruments. There were no human observers.

V. All men have souls. Both men and animals are more than material creatures.

VI. There is good and evil.

VII. Adam was created good but by his own choice became evil. This sin nature is passed to all men.

VIII. Time is part of the original creation. There was no time before God created. The entire universe is less than seven thousand years old.

IX. Four rivers flowed out of the garden in (not of) Eden. The only way this could be possible is that the entire earth was only one continent.

X. All technology, arts and science were fully developed soon after creation, before the flood.

XI. Noah built his ark on a mountain. The draft of his ark was fifteen cubits. When the ark floated off the mountain, every mountain on earth had to be covered. It also means that the highest antediluvian mountain on earth was low enough to build an ark on. It had to be much lower than Kilamanjaro or Mount Everest today.

XII. Men immediately after the flood were technologically advanced. They had ships which could navigate throughout the entire earth.

XIII. Nimrod and the tower of Babel is a true historical event.

XIV. Genealogies are accurate.

XV. The table of nations is accurate.

XVI. Ancient documents which support the Scriptures are accurate. Ancient documents which do not support the Scriptures are in error.

XVII. The Ice Age was immediately after the flood and probably ended while Joseph was in Egypt. This is a time after the flood of worldwide geologic upheaval. The great mountains were created suddenly at this time.

XVIII. Though our modern Gregorian calendar is inaccurate, Adam was thrown out of the garden about 4000 BC and the Exodus took place about 1446 BC.

XIX. Written documents are the records of observers and therefore accurate scientific records. Artifacts unearthed by modern scientists have many problems and are of secondary value.

Principles of Education for Findley Family Video Publications

bib studies teacher ebook

bib studies student ebook

(In honor of the launching our first full Curriculum offering, Findley Family Video Biblical Studies, a 600+ page compilation of Bible teaching, with a separate, full teacher’s manual, we begin a series of articles on our philosophy of education and homeschooling. The Biblical Studies book, a greatly expanded and complete revision of our original Biblical Studies title, should be up on Amazon, Scribd  and Smashwords later today.)

We seek to teach a biblical worldview and impart Scriptural principles.

Students cannot be permitted to divorce academic disciplines and areas of study from the Scriptures, as Secularists would have them do, to relegate God’s Word to Philosophy, Morality and the realm of feelings and emotions. At one time these disciplines were one study, interconnected at all points, and they need to be restored to that state. Even the arts exist to serve God and glorify Him, as men sang His praises and ornamented His house and His servants’ garments.

It is essential to view Creation and related scientific concepts as accurately recorded in the Scriptures, because this establishes the accuracy and authority of the Word of God from its very beginning. Paleontological finds are secondary to the true record of God’s Word, welcome as supports, but they must be handled without the bias and preconceptions secularists attach, frequently to try to disprove the Scriptures.

The genealogies and records of kings’ reigns in the Scriptures provide a close timeline of the history of the World, with the possible exception of a few missing generations or co-regencies. Reliance upon archaeological findings and artifacts should not be the primary, or especially the only, means of establishing history’s events. Consideration should be given to ancient documentation, primarily the Scriptures, and other discoveries secondarily, as welcome supporting evidence.

Literature is often the records of man’s achievements and seeks to glorify him. Only the Scriptures give glory to God while highlighting lives and characters of His choicest servants and those who failed to follow Him with all their hearts. We study other examples of poetry, prose and historical records to see where man’s sin nature has corrupted the truth, where the light of his former character as made in God’s Image still shines out, to learn to discern what is excellent and reject what is false and hurtful.

Especially we want to teach students to reject the pervasive, overwhelming secularist thinking in education and culture. We want to restore man to a right relationship with God. This can only be done as he learns to do justice, to love mercy, to walk humbly with his God. To do justice he must control his desires, do his rightful work, and serve others. To love mercy he must want to help others come to God and grow in Him and to love them as God loves them. Above all he must be humble, selfless, seeking God’s glory and not his own.

He must learn not to view disagreement, discipline, or correction as a personal attack. He is not a victim. If others have wronged him or sinned against him, he should seek to make that right by Scriptural means and then let God comfort him and bring him past any bitterness or pain. Conversely, he cannot forgive what has not been repented of, though he can let God strengthen him to look beyond personal wrongs or hurts.

He must not put the Scriptures into a mold made by Humanists that will require stripping it of its absolute authority. He must not listen to his heart, for it is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. He must not trust his feelings, for they come from his fallen, sinful nature and will make him behave without regard for God’s teaching and usually selfishly and proudly.

There is a spiritual component to life. There are Angels and Demons as well as God and Satan, Heaven and Hell. Only the Scriptures can “empower,” by teaching us how to live as God wants us to. We cannot “open our minds” or “empty them” to let in some mysterious wisdom, nor can we be guided by an “inner light.” These are concepts opposed to the teachings of the Word of God and make us vulnerable to Satanic Control and human failings.

We cannot be fascinated with unnatural or supernatural beings and their so-called powers. The obsession with personal advancement and power is evil unless it is through God’s spiritual gifts and as a means to serve Him better.  Resurrection from the dead or immortality should be considered only in the context of the miraculous instances in the Scriptures or the believer joining Christ in Heaven. We cannot speak with the dead. We cannot use nature’s “forces” or “spirits.” We cannot transform into something else except by Satanic means. No spirit or person can control our souls or spirits or eternal destinies beyond God’s power to redeem us.

Families consist of a mother and father who are legally married and wholly committed to a life together, each giving all to the other and to God. Parents must be an example of self-control, unselfish love for each other and their children. A family is a unit and under the best circumstances they will all work together to grow spiritually, physically and financially, sharing responsibilities of keeping an orderly, spiritual household and providing for its financial maintenance.

The woman’s place in the home is described best in Proverbs 31, where she earns income that benefits the household while making its internal maintenance, her husband’s security and reputation, and her children’s growth in character, her primary concerns.
